Modern Home Design
House De Waal
Modern Home Design – Our client wanted to purchase an existing home in the highly sought after Southdowns Estate with its lovely tree-lined streets and farm style homes, which she could then renovate and update according to her tastes. We went on a viewing with her and an estate agent through the entire estate and we helped her choose the perfect home to compliment her heirloom furniture pieces. She wanted a relaxed, down to earth home where she could effortlessly entertain family and guests or simply relax when she’s not out on a high adrenaline adventure.

With the concept design we wanted to give this farm style home, which was one of the first homes built in the estate, a bit of a facelift. The idea was to let the interior living areas of the home spill out into the patio and garden, the perfect home for our South African climate and culture.
This home is a ground floor unit with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, a maids room and bathroom, an open plan kitchen with separate laundry and scullery, dining room and living room. It has 2 garages connecting to the laundry and scullery rooms and a separate quaint one bedroom flatlet with 2 garages.
We added steel and luna wood timber pergolas to the entire front length of the home which ads shade to the rooms in the afternoons and lengthens the patio area. We also added water features to the walkway leading up to the front door.
The home’s entrance was redesigned with a larger glass front door and we knocked out an interior wall to open the space up and make it lighter.
The kitchen which is literally and figuratively the heart of this home, was redesigned to give it a more contemporary feel. The interior designer, Effects Interiors, chose a white marble counter for the kitchen island with a wooden breakfast bar attached to it for contrast. The kitchen cabinets have a sleek white gloss finish and the whole design contrasts beautifully with the client’s heirloom cabinets and the floor’s original terracotta clay tiles.
The main bedroom’s bathroom was redesigned and the floors were replaced with a gorgeous semi-gloss, off-white screed.
